The Ponte Vecchio and Vasari's
Corridor are on the list of must see attractions whilst in
Florence and are located only 700 metres from the Hotel Rex.
The Ponte Vecchio as the name would suggest is the Oldest
Bridge in Florence dating back to the 14th century... Of course
it has been rebuilt several times although mercifully the
retreating Germans declined to blow it up even if they destroyed
Florence's 6 other bridges.
The Ponte Vecchio is very whimsical and people loiter here
with their ice creams whilst peering in the windows of the
many tiny jewellery shops that are perilously perched on the
bridges steep walls... above shops spans Vasari's
Corridor which was built as an escape route for the
infamous Florentine Medici family - the corridor runs from
the Palazzo Vecchio i.e. Florence Town Hall through the Uffizi
art Gallery over the Ponte Vecchio until it terminates at
the Palazzo Pitti - a fortified stronghold impregnable to
attack which remains more or less identical as it was 500
years ago. The Ponte Veccho is easily reachable from the Firenze
Hotel Rex - please see our hotel concierge or our location
page for further information.
